Born in Belfast in 1953, Paul lives in County Down, Northern Ireland, where he has been a self-employed architect for 28 years. Throughout that time his main interest has been plein air painting in all mediums.
‘I tutor and give demonstrations to local art groups but my first love is to be out painting in the sunshine. A quick watercolour sketch or better still a one hour oil study. My current favourite medium is gouache. I then use the sketches for demonstration purposes’.
‘There is nowhere nicer to paint than Ireland. I do short trips on my Harley-Davidson and longer ones in my camper-van. But Ireland can be a bit wet, so I travel a lot around Europe with my compact plein-air kit’.
‘Being an architect, a self-taught, and solely plein-air artist, my style of painting is unique. Time saving methods…gather as much visual information in as short a time as possible…finish the piece alla-prima.
Artist, Jim Doolan says it better on Instagram…’Paul, this shows you in fine form, decisive and superbly confident. This quality work can only come after a period of sustained work on location when a genuine ‘short-hand’ method is possible. Great work indeed.”
