Alice Johnson spent over 25 years as a sweater designer in the fashion industry. The second phase of her career includes teaching in the fashion department at Jefferson University (formerly Philadelphia University), teaching fashion to children, and teaching beginning college to adults, while working on her own collages and painting.
Her “Paper Doll” collages explore non-traditional beauty. Through the juxtaposition of body parts and body coverings, using unconventional pairings of visual and textural elements, she creates pieces which make the viewer question what is beautiful and what is fashionable.
Her dreamscapes explore the fantasy of living in a colourful hut surrounded by the ocean. Collaged work includes acrylic paint, masking tape, magazine images, old photographs, novelty papers, buttons, fabrics and other ephemera
