The Art School
Our school sits in the heart of the historically protected and picturesque fishing town of Olhão, perfectly placed to capture its romantic charm.
We’ve carefully restored the school, retaining historic vaulted ceilings, Roman brickwork and other authentic features, whilst designing studio and courtyard areas that are flooded with natural light. This has created a tranquil space that’s designed to inspire artistic creativity.
Our studio space
Our ground floor studio is naturally lit by the expanse of windows along the side of the school and has plenty of space for artists to set out easels, take part in demonstrations with an art tutor or transfer sketches into paintings after a day trip.
The studio is surrounded by three large courtyards – one with a beautiful olive tree that’s said to be 150 years old – which offer space, light and texture for outdoor work. We also have terraces, which are great spots to set up and paint.
Our art courses
We run courses throughout the year, and you’ll find something that’s suitable for you, whether you are a beginner or a more advanced painter. We cover watercolours, oils, mixed medium and other specialist areas, and our courses all follow a similar pattern of sketching in and around the village and using the school’s studio space.
The easy option
Our school can comfortably accommodate up to 15 artists and a tutor. We supply easels, boards, tables and chairs for working inside the school – either in our studios or outdoors – and we also offer portable easels, chairs and sun umbrellas for those days when you are painting or sketching around Olhão itself. We also have jars and rags for brush cleaning.
